A tall church tower that the children and Sunday School teachers at Oakley Methodist church would be happy to see go to a new home. Read more about this below:
In June, we celebrated our Sunday School Anniversary and this year our theme was Learning for Living. We started by thinking about all the things we learn at home, at school and in Church. As we considered each of these activities we gradually built a tower.
The base was concerned with learning to count and we found hymns and songs that fitted our theme. Some that reminded our older friends of their early days which delighted them. We sang 'Count your blessings' and '1, 2, 3, Jesus love me'.
The second tier was about learning to read and we sang 'Read your bible, pray every day'. We then learned about following Jesus and completed the final tier with 'We are building day by day'. As many of our children are very young we tried to find action songs which helped them to learn and take part.
Our service was conducted by our Superintendent Minister, the Revd. David Priestnall, and the congregation joined in with suitable songs such as 'For I'm building a people of power' and Seek ye first the kingdom of God'. Our older young people recited a poem entitled 'Did Jesus use a modem?'.
We are fortunate in having Dick Chatterton who built the tower for us, using all his considerable skill and imagination. He even managed to guess the correct time when the final block was placed!
The whole occasion was a great blessing to us all and we would be glad to send a copy of our programme to anyone who feels they could make use of it and if you could use the tower, we would be happy for you to have it if you could collect it - it is very light!
